Sexually transmitted diseases (STD), including HIV, are among the most common infections in the world and can have devastating consequences. There is greater risk of acquiring STDs and HIV in lesser developed countries where they are more common. Increased sexual promiscuity and casual sexual relationships tend to occur during travel to foreign destinations. Commercial sexual services (e.g. in Southeast Asia) attract many foreign travelers.
STD symptoms include vaginal, penile or anal discharge, genital lesions and pelvic pain. Seek prompt medical care if you develop any of these signs. If you had sexual activity that puts you at risk for an STD, see your physician for testing even if you have no symptoms.
